Flesh-eating bacteria may force man to have all limbs amputated

A New Jersey father who contracted a flesh-eating bacteria while crabbing on the July 4 weekend might need to have his limbs amputated, but he hasn’t lost the will to live, his family says.

Angel Perez, 60, of Millville was fishing for crabs when his family said he contracted Vibrio necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially deadly infection caused by bacteria found in warm waters along the coast that can enter the body through a cut.

Perez’s limbs turned black, and he was eventually admitted to the intensive-care unit at Cooper University Hospital and treated with antibiotics and placed on dialysis — but his family says he hasn’t completely recovered and is facing amputation of his hands and feet.

“Through the strength of prayer and the love of his family, Angel Perez decided that he will continue to fight for his life,” Anita Wilson, a friend of the family, posted Saturday on a GoFundMe page set up to help defray Perez’s medical costs.

His daughter, Dilena Perez-Dilan, told NJ Advance Media that one day after fishing off Matts Landing on the Maurice River, he became deathly ill.

She said the lower half of his right leg swelled, and blisters formed, and the infection soon spread throughout his body.

Perez-Dilan said the family is hoping to transfer him to a long-term care facility, where he can continue to receive dialysis.
