Magnum PI Murders Two Ferraris in the First EpisodeAugust 6, 2018
When CBS’ Magnum P.I. reboot hits TV screens in September, it’s hitting hard, with lots of ammo, pyro and fast cars. Just don’t get too attached to them. The red Ferrari 488s in the pilot episode, which rivals any summer blockbuster with the action and hand-to-hand combat scenes Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and his partner Perdita Weeks are in, get it — and another one bites the dust too. Said Hernandez: “It’s a little bit sad to watch a Ferrari go off a cliff.”
Exec producer Peter Lenkov wouldn’t say exactly how much the first episode cost, but Hernandez joked at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Sunday that “you could shoot a movie for the price,” given that even a used Ferrari goes for $250,000. The cars couldn’t be rented, obviously, since they were destroyed, so they had to be outright purchased.
It’s such a big bang of an episode one has to wonder how Magnum P.I. can sustain such scorched-Earth visuals, but Lenkov said the series is going to keep its moxie, even if not at the exact same level of tick-tick-boom.
“It’s not necessarily an action series,” he said, despite the fact that Magnum pulls some Mission Impossible type craziness in Episode 1 we won’t spoil here. “The cars were probably the biggest expense.” We’re hoping that means we won’t see any more of those beauties die — it’s too much to bear.
Magnum P.I. makes its debut on Sept. 24 on CBS.
